Insulation Failure Visualization for More Efficient Battery Hipot Testing

Dielectric withstand (hipot) testing confirms products can safely withstand high voltage. When a unit fails, operators struggle to tell whether it was a sudden insulation breakdown or a gradual leakage-current increase. Conventional testers give only pass/fail by a current threshold; root-cause work needs an oscilloscope, high-voltage probes, and current probes.

Why distinguishing the two failure modes matters

• Sudden insulation breakdown (a sharp current spike): likely causes include local material degradation, contamination/foreign particles, or mechanical damage. Countermeasures feed back to design and production—material selection, contamination control, lot investigation.
• Gradual leakage increase: causes extend beyond material aging to environmental changes such as temperature and humidity. Focus shifts to storage/aging conditions and test-atmosphere management.

The ST5680A integrates waveform capture and display, recording up to 260,000 points (~0.5 s at 2 µs) immediately before the test stops, so operators capture the true voltage/current behavior without external equipment and shorten feedback loops to design and manufacturing.
