Lithium-ion Battery Insulation Resistance Testing

Insulation resistance measurement is an important test on Li-ion battery (LIB) cell production lines. Structurally, the anode and cathode, and the electrodes and enclosure, must be insulated. Insufficient insulation resistance risks ignition or fire.

When to test

• Before filling electrolyte: apply DC voltage between anode and cathode and measure insulation resistance
• After filling electrolyte: apply DC voltage between each electrode and the enclosure

How to measure

Use an insulation resistance tester designed for high-insulation measurement. It applies a DC voltage, detects the minuscule resulting current with a built-in high-sensitivity ammeter, and calculates the resistance.

Key selection considerations

• Measurement range and accuracy
• Test voltage (typically 100–200 V; low voltages like 5 V or 50 V are becoming common)
• Charging current (larger current shortens charge time given the cell's double-layer capacitance)
